Living Culture – The Borucas

Meet the Boruca people, one of Costa Rica’s few remaining indigenous groups.

Learn about their vibrant traditions, from intricate mask-making to ancestral ceremonies that honor nature and community.

This experience bridges past and present—combining archaeology, anthropology, and hands-on cultural immersion for a deep understanding of Costa Rica’s indigenous roots.

The Site – Finca 6

This immersive cultural tour takes place in the Boruca Indigenous Territory, guided by a local Boruca guide who shares the history, traditions, and living culture of their community.

The experience begins with a visit to local Boruca mask artisans, where you will learn the meaning and symbolism behind the famous hand-carved masks used in ancestral ceremonies. You will then take part in a hands-on mask painting workshop, creating your own piece using traditional patterns and colors.

A special moment of the tour is a visit with the guide’s grandmother, who demonstrates how natural dyes are traditionally extracted from plants and minerals and applied to fibers used for making clothing—an ancestral knowledge passed down through generations.

An indigenous traditional lunch will be served, prepared with local ingredients, followed by a Boruca coffee, offering a warm and authentic way to connect with daily life in the community.

This tour is more than a visit—it is a respectful cultural exchange that supports local families, preserves ancestral knowledge, and offers a deep understanding of one of Costa Rica’s most important indigenous cultures.

Masters of Masks

The Boruca are famous for their hand-carved and hand-painted wooden masks, used in the annual « Danza de los Diablitos » to reenact their resistance against the Spanish conquest.

Danza de los Diablitos

This powerful three-day festival blends pre-Columbian and Catholic traditions, symbolizing the eternal fight between indigenous identity  and colonization

Guardians of the Mountains

The Boruca live in the highlands of southern Costa Rica and have fiercely protected their ancestral lands, culture, and traditions for generations.

The Site – Finca 6

Step into Costa Rica’s ancient past at Finca 6, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its mysterious pre-Columbian stone spheres.

It preserves original alignments of the mysterious pre-Columbian stone spheres—massive granite orbs carved with astonishing precision by the ancient Diquís civilization over 1,000 years ago.

Finca 6 is a journey back in time—a connection to something far older and deeper than modern Costa Rica.

The Mysterious Stone Spheres

Finca 6 is one of the few places where Costa Rica’s famous pre-Columbian stone spheres are still found in situ—exactly where the ancient Diquís people placed them over 1,000 years ago.

Perfectly Round Stones

Some of the spheres are so precisely carved that they are nearly perfect in roundness—despite being made from solid granodiorite and weighing several tons.

Lost Civilization

The Diquís culture, which created the spheres, vanished before Spanish arrival—leaving no written records and making the purpose of the spheres a mystery still debated by archaeologists.
